Nolichucky River
A tributary of the French Broad River, rises right before the Nolichucky gorge where whitewater paddling is predominant. The river makes its boundary between Yancey County and Mitchell County. The name has long been debated and unclear, according to local lore, stands for rushing waters; or derived from the Cherokee village na’na-tiu-gun’yi near Jonesborough, Tennessee.
