Anglers from all over the world come to Asheville to catch trophy smallmouth. The smallmouth bass is a freshwater predator only found in Asheville’s rivers and deep mountain lakes. The smallmouth bass is highly concentrated in the French Broad River, Nolichucky, Tuckasegee and Little Tennessee rivers. Smallmouth bass favor rock ledges, eddies, grass beds and log jams.
Smallmouth Fishing in Western North Carolina
During your smallmouth guided trip you will fish for smallmouth using light spin tackle and/or fly fishing. Spin tackle rods are outfitted for 6-8 pound test monofilament to pull soft plastics and small jerkbaits to imitate baitfish.
Fly fishing rods are outfitted for 7 or 8wts and common patterns are popping bugs and small streamers to imitate crawfish and baitfish. Streamer patterns are most common when fishing for smallmouth. All of our patient instructors will teach you how to properly cast, strip and strip set for big river smallmouth!
